my kmart trip last week

|

i spent a little over $12, including tax on this past trip.

i signed up at kmart.com and they sent me a $5 off a $50 purchase coupon, which was good for the total before coupons (it was around $90). that definitely helped!

everything else i got by using high-value coupons i'd accumulated but not used because i didn't want to fork out the extra $ for the product.

my first kmart trip didn't go incredibly well. it was just about a month ago exactly they had double coupons the first time i knew about it.
i spent a lot more than i wanted to, you can read about it here. so this time around, i just stashed up on high value coupons waiting for the next double coupon days.

it was a big suprise when it came only a month later! i had no idea they did it that often.
here's a picture of everything i got. it was a fun 2 hours :)

i will keep you updated as soon as i know when the next one will be!

softsoap at walgreens : update! not rolling??

|

i went back after having success with the first coupon and it DID NOT print out another catalina coupon. :( it was at the cosmetics counter on mattis & springfield.

anyone still getting the coupon when using the coupon?

meijer highlights week of 3.29 (some good coupons deals!)

|

first, a little story!
my younger sister was up for the weekend and we made a homemade pizza. it was AWESOME!
i will post a picture soon.
we used this recipe for the crust
and this recipe for the sauce (it was delicious.. we tweaked it a bit because i didn't have all the ingredients).
we got pepperoni for 98 cents, tomato paste for 62 cents, mushrooms for 60 cents and the cheese for only $1.50... all at meijer. i already had everything to make the dough! i also picked up some canadian bacon at save-a-lot (it is really cheap there, i paid 80 cents and got a nice sized chunk).

we had a great experince together, and also had a great pizza without spending much $.

i also got:

non-coupon deals
butter $1.50
frozen bagged tilapia $3.50
dole premium blends salad 3/$5
mangos .50 cents
shredded cheese $1.50

cvs deals week of 3.29

|

i didn't do the softsoap ensembles deal.
the base is $7.99 and the refills are $3.99.
i re-read the coupon from the cvs handout and the $2 off is good only on the pump, not the refills.
so, if you still want to do the deal, you can use two $2 coupons, get the $4 ecbs, and you'd be getting two pumps for $4 each, which is 50% off, but way more than i'm willing to pay!

i did, however, get the cottonelle moist wipes and one more deal i didn't mention before:

scrubbing bubbles action scrubber is on sale for $2.99. there is a $2.75 off printable here.
total = only .25 cents!

walgreens deals. week of 3.29

|

okay, here are the notes about the deals i did! (check out the sneak peek post for more info)

- the advil pm doesn't work like i thought it would.. the coupon in the ad is for the larger one, which costs about $12.

- the softsoap body wash catalina coupon is ROLLING. which means.... when you use your coupon to get a free one, it prints out yet another one!

- there are three FREEBIES after RRs at walgreens. (limit ONE, the shaving creams count as the same thing, so you cannot buy both and get two RRs)
1 - edge men's shaving gel ($2.99)
2 - skintimates cream shave (this is a new product) ($2.99)
3 - true shimmer chapstick ($1.99)

- you must buy two kotex products to get the RR

- the life cereal deal worked great, no questions asked about the coupons!

- i also did the clorox deal with no hassle.

sneak peek at next weeks ads!

|

here are some of the best deals that i know about for the upcoming week at walgreens and cvs (hopefully there will be more to come!)
i am using a couple of newspaper insert coupons this week, so hopefully you've been buying the paper!
be sure to pick up the coupon-filled cvs insert. there's a stack at the one on springfield and mattis, i'm sure they're at all locations.. they're with the weekly flyers... there are a lot of good coupons in there.. and you'll definitely use at least one this week!

there will be a coupon for $3 off advil pm in the walgreens ad.. pair it with the $2 printable here and it should be very cheap, if not free (i'm not sure how much these run)

get $1 RR when you buy select kotex products on sale for $3.
i have a $1 and .75 cents off coupon from a newspaper insert several weeks ago, hopefully you have them too!

get $2 RR when you buy two boxes of life cereal (on sale 2/$5). use the $1 off coupons here to get them for only 5o cents a box!

use the buy two clorox products, get wipes free coupon from here paired with the walgreens in-ad coupon for clorox bleach 2/$3
total $1 each

when you buy softsoap body wash ($3.99) the register will (hopefully, not confirmed yet!) print out a coupon for another one. i hope this is like the irish springs where the coupons keep rolling!! (**update.. it is rolling!!**)
i also have a $1 off coupon from a previous newspaper insert.

dawn dish soap is on sale for 99 cents with an in-ad coupon. use the 50 cents off coupons from the home made simple coupon booklet (mine new one arrived today!)

get $4 ecb when you buy two softsoap ensembles (prices starting at $3.99).
there is a $2 off coupon in the cvs insert mentioned above.
there was also a $1 off coupon in the newspaper not too long ago.. i'm not sure if they would let you use both or not.. i'm sure it just depends on your cashier.
total=FREE

cottonelle moist wipes, 42 ct. on sale for $1.99.
use the .50/1 printable here to get them for only $1.50

my ten

|
alright, since i suggested you all make a list of ten ways to save and stick to it, here are my ten:

1. bag my lunch and bring it to work every single day. you would think i already do this, it's so simple. half the time i skip lunch, go to the vending machine, or go to my SOs who never has much of anything "good" to eat. i will start packing it the night before so i have no excuse.
some of my ideas:
cheese & crackers
egg/chicken/tuna salad
yogurt
salad (with egg, cheese, cucumber, tomato)
veggies + dip
fruit
pb+j
raisins
canned corn or green beans
nuts (when they're on sale.. i wish they weren't so darn expensive)
whole carrot (yes..i love them plain!)
grilled cheese
rice
cold pasta salad
bean salad
bagel + cream cheese
soup

2.watch my electricity use like a hawk. i was told by CPM here in champaign that all my utilities were included in my rent. i asked several times to double check. well to them, "all utilities" includes gas and water.. not electricity. which was fine for the winter because we have the old gas heat registers.. but come summertime, there is NO central air, so i will be running a window unit AND i have to pay for the electricity. ugh.

4. take care of myself. i'm 5'7" and weigh 130. i don't exercise. ever. i loathe it. i need to start. it will make me feel better and save healthcare costs down the road. how do people enjoy it? do you enjoy it? let me know how. i have a pit/lab mix and really really need to start getting her outside more often. this will also save on some gas costs. i am within walking distance to walgreens, schnucks, gas stations, and the post office. i also promise to sit with a good posture in my chair at work, my body aches every single day and i'm sick of it.

5. QUIT SMOKING. i have no option. i didn't buy any for a month and "borrowed" from others. i finally bought two packs 2 weeks ago with a $3.40 off 2 packs coupon. i bought some last night without a coupon. $5.53!?!?!?!? no way. i'm done, it's over. it has to be.

6. eat oatmeal in the morning at least 3x/week.

7. start making meals in bulk and freeze for later. i did this with gumbo once and it was awesome.. what do you want for dinner? oh, i don't know.. um, we have the gumbo in the freezer...okay.... AND.. 10 minutes later, we're eating homemade gumbo. fabulous.
i'm going to make this tonight but add some tuna (on sale at county market this week for 65 cents). i have all the ingredients at home (well except for peas, which i still don't like, so green beans will replace them)

8. use 1/3 less laundry detergent and dish washing soap

9. sell some stuff on craigslist and ebay

10. eat less meat. it's expensive.

my simple tips to spend less

|
1. quit drinking pop. water is healthier anyway. i've been pop-free except on special occasions for a good while now.

2. use coupons and subscribe to this blog! :) it's a lot of fun saving so much $

3. find a hobby. i am gardening this summer. you should, too! think of all those fresh veggies & fruits (sweet corn, tomatoes, strawberries........) think of all the $ you'll save too. read this post if you're not convinved... there are SO MANY benefits.
i also love to cook. rent movies free from the library. my guilty pleasure is restore on saturdays where i keep my budget to $5 (it's easy to do there) ...they have $5 gallon buckets of paint!

4. get rid of the cable (at least for the summer!) i have been cable-free (and proud of it) since november ($30/month is a good chunk of change). i listen to books on tape rented free from the library instead. i mean, humans survived for hundreds of years without it.. it's a relatively new thing. c'mon. challenge yourself! to a "trial month" and see how it goes.

5. try your hand at digital scrapbooking and photography. it's wonderful and FREE!

6. call your creditors! i have had numerous APRs lowered by spending 5 minutes to make a simple phone call.

7. google around.. type in "creative ways to save money".. or something to that effect. write down your top ten and actually DO THEM. you will feel better, i promise.

okay, it was meant to be : free magazine subscriptions!

|

i JUST mentioned free magazine subscriptions in my last post, and here they magically are!

two free issues of redbook
six issues of seventeen here
one year of metropolitan home here (survey takes a minute, but worth it!)

walgreens & cvs trips today

|
the coupon in glamour mentioned for the cvs deal is NOT THERE. i looked through them while i was in the store; i think it must've been in the one for subscribers only. oh well...

but just 10 minutes ago, there was a fair amount of pro-health and post trail mix crunch left at the cvs on springfield & mattis. GO GET 'EM!

i haven't made it to the grocery store yet.

i broke down and got two bottles of flaxseed oil from walgreens (did the BOGO nature's bounty deal). pledge fabric sweepers were gone :( i don't drink pop (too expensive!) so i didn't do the pepsi deal, and i'd already printed the arm & hammer coupons (cvs had the exact same deal 2 wks ago).
two bottles with 120 capsules each cost me a little over $10 including tax. not bad. i have been reading my 3 free issues of body + soul magazine. (sorry, the deal from rewards gold is dead, i got it before i started the blog!). one article mentioned the incredbile benefits of flaxseed. my SO is living with ulcerative colitis and it is said to help with that as well, so i'm hoping the $10 was worth it! i am just in love with this magazine!
i will be sure to let all of you know asap if there's a new rewards gold FREE subscription out there!

i also made a trip to danville and took advantage of the double coupon days at k mart. my SO goes to the VA clinic there so after his appointment, i forced him to stop!
i got some great deals!!!!!
i will post a photo tomorrow, but my $86 original total came to a grand total of $12 after coupons.
i was thrilled. it was my best trip hands-down.

excedrin deal still good at walgreens

|
between myself, two friends, and a couple of co-workers, i have gone through almost an entire bottle of this in 2 1/2 weeks!

and the deal is still going on because it uses printables online and a walgreens coupon that is good for the entire month of march.

excedrin menstrual complete express gels are $5-$6
use walgreens easysaver coupon for $4 off. then, use the $2 printable express coupon right here

so.. you can get it free.. and with a good chunk of overage.

reasons to veggie garden this summer

|
here's a little blurb i wrote for work. it's featured in prairie gardens' minimag.. it's in the store now! come on out and get some seeds for your summer garden :)

We all know the number one reason to plant vegetables and herbs: freshness! They don’t come from the store. They haven’t been packed, shipped, or sitting on a shelf. They’ve been growing right in front of your eyes, straight from Mother Nature. So, why else should you grow your own?

1 – Convenience. Fresh food is right in your backyard… literally. Think of your summer filled with a wonderful outdoor hobby and no trips to the store for vegetables. Now that sounds great, huh? If you don’t have a backyard or don’t have much space, don’t worry! Container vegetable gardening is fun, easy, and a wonderful solution for saving space.

2 – Control. Pesticides, insecticides, chemicals….. everything that you’ll get when you buy a veggie from the store. And in your garden? You know what’s on it, you know where it’s been. You know it’s safe to eat for you and your family.

3 – Cost. These days, everyone is wondering how to save a buck. When you have your own garden, you can plan it out to produce fresh food all summer long and even into early fall. Plan your meals with lots of veggies and watch your summer grocery bill hit an all time low. Now, just for fun, let’s do some math… A whole packet of tomato seeds will cost you about $1 to $3. That’s the same price as just a pound of tomatoes at the grocery store or farmer’s market. Now, with each individual tomato plant yielding at least 10 pounds (most yield between 15 and 45), you can understand how much money this hobby can truly save you and your family in the long run.

4 - Variety. You have endless options. Choose from heirloom varieties that are true to their “roots” or choose a new hybrid for improved flavor or disease resistance. At Prairie Gardens, we have an extensive selection of both seeds and plants to give you whatever you’re looking for.

5 – Health. Do it for your family and for yourself. Fresh veggies all summer long will give an incredible healthy boost to your diet. Plan your meals each week with lots of vegetables that will be ready for harvest. Fast food here, frozen pizza there… No more of that! You’ll have fresh sweet corn, tomatoes, strawberries, and more instead.

6 - Hobby. Gardening can be fun, productive, and rewarding for the whole family. Spend time outdoors instead of cooped up in the house. Young children can certainly help with all sorts of tasks in the garden. Have them pick weeds or give them their own “special” watering can in a bright color. It’s simple, fun, and healthy for everyone. (Check out our great selection of brightly colored plastic watering cans, your kids will love them!)

7 – Experiment. Have fun! Plant a wide variety of veggies and herbs. Experiment with ones you’ve never tried. Combine dill and red potatoes… thyme and summer squash… mint and apples… You just might fall in love.

8 – Save. You can very easily dry fresh herbs to last through the winter. You can also preserve vegetables by canning or in some cases, freezing. If you grow enough, your vegetables could last until next spring!

going well!

|
things are going pretty well.. i have definitely been devoting a ton of time to my new couponing hobby, which is GREAT. if you haven't looked into it, please do!!!!!! it is satisfying my womanly itch to shop and i'm spending next to nothing.

financially, things are getting there. i ordered girl scout cookies awhile back and totally forgot about them. they came in today and i had to cough up $24.50!! my SO ordered four boxes of peanut butter cookies (and i owed him a little $).. i got a thin mint box and two caramel delites.

i'm keeping up on everything pretty good. this past week was a little bit of a struggle with the new cash envelope system! but i think as i get used to it, it will be one of the best things i've done for myself.

cvs frustration

|
ecbs CANNOT be reprinted. i am out $8 and i just need to get over it... but come on! this system is truly confusing! i will just use my two $25 coupons for transferred prescriptions.. and you better believe they are getting transferred right back out after the first refill!!!

here's my email:

"Hi Ashley,

I understand that you are not able to do anything. However, for future customers and the way in which this system works, my suggestion is to add this to the FAQ. I mean, are you hoping customers lose their Extra Care Bucks? Do you make this unclear on purpose?

Nowhere in the FAQ does it state the bucks are printed on your receipt. I am just frustrated that you link (1) a scan card to (2) a system online to (3) printed receipts!! That is very confusing. I have proof I earned these Extra Bucks right on my screen yet I cannot use them. It just doesn't quite add up.

I am sorry to say that I will be choosing Walgreens (which is right across the street) from now on because of this issue. I really can't believe those cannot be refunded. What a poor system and honestly poor customer service."

i could scream - KEEP YOUR ECBS :)

|
i threw away my extra care bucks!!!
i went to cvs last night, whipped my card out like i knew what i was doing, and the lady looked at me like i was crazy. i guess i assumed they were linked to my card since that's what they scan and i can log into my account online and see my bucks.. but they are printed on the receipt! i saw them on there, but i thought it was just showing me how much i got.. no clue i had to physically keep it.
ugh, i am calling cvs this afternoon and hopefully i can get them reprinted!

but, on good note, i got a mailer yesterday for a $25 gift card if i transfer a prescription to cvs. there were two coupons.. and guess what? i have two prescriptions! i currently get mine filled at walgreens.. cvs is much less convenient for me, but the $50 outweighs that.. and besides, i'm sure walgreens will come back with some great offer to get me back and i can switch yet again. see this page if you are interested in the "prescription transfer game"

walgreens trip number two

|

butterball chicken broth...69 cents
(use in-ad coupon)

currently, conagra (maker of butterball) is offering a $5 rebate if you buy $10 worth of their products. now, i was going to do this deal yesterday, but it looked like they were regularly priced at 75 cents..(other places online claimed this is regularly priced at $1.19, so you'd buy 9 cans for $10.71... i wasn't quite sure of the deal so i didn't do it)
if the broth is regularly 75 cents, i would buy 14 cans for a total of $10.50. coupons would take of 84 cents. after the rebate, you'd end up paying $4.66 for 14 cans, or 33 cents/can.

also....

it is rumored that the buy one, get a free coupon irish spring body wash deal is even better... if you get another body wash with your coupon, it will give you another one for yet another free body wash!
i'm definitely trying this out tonight and i'll let you know.

cvs weekly deals!!

|

some great deals.. but only one freebie!

here's what's on my list:

total will be 50 cents for both!

walgreens trip!

|
i had a wonderful trip to walgreens yesterday afternoon!!

here's what i got (and what you can get, too!!)

dealone
(they had a huge end cap full of these at the one on mattis & springfield yesterday!)
glade lasting impressions (sense & spray also works for this deal)
cost: about $7.99
t
otal of $15.98

use 2 walgreens $4 easysaver coupons here

***for this, i use the program screenshot pilot (free download from download.com) to take a screenshot of the coupon i want, the crop it and print it.. so i don't waste ink on the coupons i don't need or want***

use internet printable buy one, get one coupon
(sense & spray B1G1 here, lasting impressions B1G1 here, or both on the same page here)

and one $3 or $4 coupon from here for the one you're not getting free

math... $15.98 - $8 = $7.98 / 2 = $3.99 - $3 = 99 cents for TWO!

dealtwo
i got two boxes of the free excedrin menstrual gels see the deal here.
(they wouldn't let me use two manufacturer's coupons, so i had to give up two $1 coupons)
math... $5.99 each x 2 = 11.98 - $8 (from two$4 easysaver coupons) - $4 (from two $2/1 manufacturer's coupons) = -.02

dealthree
axe shampoo.. free after easysaver rebate! (see this month's catalog here)
math... free! (but paid $5.88 upfront)

dealfour
buy one irish springs body wash, get a catalina coupon for a free one! (catalina coupons are the ones that print out after your receipt!)
plus, i had a $1/1 coupon (from the 2/22 paper i believe) so it only cost me $3.50 for two!
math...$4.49 - $1 (one $1/1 manufacturers coupon) = $3.50

then.. because i had more coupons than i had items, i picked up some nail polish remover, pepper, and ramen noodles!
math... $1.49 + $1 + 30 cents = $2.79

TOTAL so, after all was said and done, my total was $15.49 including tax. i used my $10 register reward from the dove soap deal, and ended up paying $5.49 out of pocket for all of this. then, subtract the $5.99 i will get back from the axe rebate, and i actually MADE MONEY!!
