nuts + bolts of walgreens

|
1. there are two ways to save. through the monthly easysaver catalog and through register rewards. (rumor has it this is the last month for the easysaver catalog)

2. the easysaver catalog is a small booklet found inside the store near the weekly ads or you can also view it online. it is full of coupons good only at walgreens and a variety of monthly rebates you can send in for (either online or by mail).

3. register rewards print on a "special register" and look like a long, skinny coupon.

4. register rewards are essentially like gift cards. they are good for the dollar amount shown on your next purchase.

5. you get register rewards by buying items that are advertised as having "register rewards good on next purchase" in the weekly flyer.
- for example, some toothpaste might cost $3.49 and is advertised as giving $3,49 in register rewards. this means you will pay $3.49 upfront and a catalina coupon for $3.49 off of your next purchase will print. essentially, this item is FREE if you plan on shopping at walgreens again.

4. say i buy toothpaste that gives me a register reward. i cannot turn around and buy more of the same toothpaste using that specific register reward and get another register reward. it unfortuntely just doesn't work like that. you can certainly use other register rewards you received from buying different products.

5. you cannot split up register rewards. for example, if you have a single extrabucks reward for $3.49, you cannot use $1 on one day and save the rest for later.

6. the ultimate goal is to "roll" your register rewards. for example, you want to "pay" with register rewards you already have from before and be getting items that will give you more register rewards for your next trip.

7. register rewards deals are sometimes "hidden" and you don't know about them until someone "accidentally" buys the right thing. that's exciting!

8. each month, an easysaver catalog comes out.

9. you can combine the coupons inside the catalog with manufacturer's coupons to get deep discounts.

10. you can also use manufacturer's coupons on top of sending in for the rebates, this also will give you deep discounts.

11. there are ususally a few items that are free after rebate each month and a few items free after register rewards weekly.

12. at walgreens, you cannot have more coupons than you have items. if you do, just purchase a filler (candy bar, pencil, or something else inexpensive).

13. register rewards count as coupons.

14. you will probably have to pay a little bit out of pocket to get started on this whole thing. i started with a trip to walgreens spending $8 and receiving $7 in register rewards. i used those register rewards on my next purchase, buying items that gave me more register rewards.. and the process repeats.

now these are just the basics and they're pretty cut and dry. if you have any questions, feel free to email me!

nuts + bolts of cvs

1. sign up for an extracare card

2. use your extracare card each time you shop!

3. your card will give you discounts on items (in the ad it will say "price with card")

4. you card will also allow you to receive extracare bucks.

5. you receive extracare bucks by purchasing items advertised as having an "extra bucks reward"
- for example: some toothpaste might cost $3.49 and is advertised as having a $3.49 extra bucks reward. this means you will pay $3.49 upfront and at the bottom of your receipt, a coupon for $3.49 off of your next purchase will print. essentially, this item is FREE if you plan on shopping at cvs again.

5. extracare bucks are essentially like gift cards. they are good for the dollar amount shown. they print on the bottom of your receipt.

6. you also accumulate extracare bucks each time you make a purchase. it equals 2% of your total spending each quarter and they are issued quarterly.

7. you cannot split up extracare bucks. for example, if you have a single extrabucks reward for $3.49, you cannot use $1 on one day and save the rest for later.

8. do not accidentally throw away your extracare bucks. i learned this the hard way.

9. each week, there are usually several items that are free after ecbs.

10. the ultimate goal is to "roll" your extracare bucks. for example, you want to "pay" with extracare bucks you already have from before and be getting items that will give you more extracare bucks for your next trip.

11. you will probably have to pay a little bit out of pocket to get started on this whole thing. i started with a trip to cvs spending $14 and receiving $7.99 in extracare bucks (which i accidentally threw away, ugh!). i should/could have used those extracare bucks on my next purchase, buying items that gave me more extracare bucks.. and the process repeats.

now these are just the basics and they're pretty cut and dry. if you have any questions, feel free to email me!

my tips

|
--be on the lookout for gift card coupons for transferring a prescription. if you find 'em, snag 'em! my $25 cvs card has lasted for almost 3 months and still has money on it.

--find an organization system that works for you. here is mine. i used an old photo album and printed tabs that i laminated, cut out, and taped into my album.

--don't rush out on sunday. i usually do my shopping on tuesday or wednesday. items are ususally still there and i've had time to look for more deals i might have missed. this will prevent that "oh crap i don't want to get back out" moment.

--be patient with couponing. i'm getting better and better at it each week. i was discouraged at first when i spent too much on things i didn't need at kmart's super double coupon day.

--don't rush out and use a high-value coupon. wait for it to go on sale.. because it probably will.

--stockpile when there's a good deal on something you use regularly. buy as much as you can afford (diapers, toilet paper, toothpaste, cereal...)

--always get the sunday paper and you might also want to subscribe to all you magazine found at wal-mart. i haven't done this yet, but after looking at this month's coupons, i probably will.

--if you have to throw a coupon away because it expires, don't be sad. it happens to everyone.
